A Report On The Translation Of Popular Science Text Under The Guidance Of Newmark’s Translation Theories

In recent years,popular science books occupy a significant position in China’s publishing industry,but most of the popular science books with high sales in China are excellent works introduced from abroad.At this stage,the output of domestic excellent popular science books is still in a stage of gradual rise,so the translation of popular science texts needs to be paid enough attention.This translation practice report is based on the translation of Invincible written by Leah Lagos,and the preface and the first chapter are selected as the translation material.The original book is a popular science book related to physiology and medicine,providing scientific and effective methods for readers to overcome stress and give full play to their maximum potential.According to Newmark’s text typology,the popular science text selected in this translation practice is mainly an informative text,which is obviously scientific.However,some of the content belongs to the expressive text,so it is both literary and popular.Therefore,the purpose of this translation practice is to ensure the popularity and to maintain the scientificity and literariness of popular science text in the process of translation.For one thing,for the translation of vocabularies and sentences,the translator decides to focus on the readers of the target language,applies communicative translation to ensure the popularity and fluency of the target language,and adopts a series of translation methods or techniques under its guidance,such as free translation,annotation,idiomatic translation,division,recasting translation,amplification,and conversion.For another thing,the translator decides to take the original author as the center,applies semantic translation to ensure the faithfulness and accuracy of the translated text,and adopts literal translation and liner translation under its guidance.Newmark’s communicative translation and semantic translation play a key role in guiding the translation of popular science texts.Through this translation practice,the translator has gained some experience in translating popular science texts,and hopes to bring some inspiration to the translation of the same type of texts.
