| The Nanjing Massacre, one of the cruelest tragedies in human history, still lingers in the minds of the Chinese people, has been ignored or even misunderstood for a long time by the international community. As the aggressor who committed heinous crimes,Japan tried to cover its crimes up whenever referring to the responsibility of the war.The author of this thesis argues that, only by debunking its crimes and letting more people at home and abroad know the facts can we not forget the history of humiliation and take history as a mirror to rejuvenate the Chinese nation. To improve and promote the friendly relationship between China and Japan, both sides need to have a correct understanding of history.Japan should honor its commitment of facing up to and reflecting on its history of aggression by taking actions instead of paying lip service to its obligations and deliberately covering up and distorting historical facts which would mar the relationship between the two countries and exert negative influence on the stable and peaceful international relations. The first five parts of chapter 7:Memory,legacy,and choosing to participate are selected for translation and analysis. The translator first showed respect to the expression of the original text, then gave full play to her initiative in translation or translator’s subjectivity. The analysis is carried out from two aspects. The first is dealing with the word analysis,in which the translator analyzed the proper nouns and conversion of word classes. The second dealt with the sentence analysis in which the translator used a variety of translation methods:interpretive translation, adding missing information, adjusting sentence order, etc. The translator’s intention is to ensure the smooth flow of the translated language through the translator’s subjectivity, thus obtaining a desired translated version so as to help safeguard national sovereignty and national interests, and strengthen the international discourse power on the historical truth of the Nanjing Massacre. |
