A Chinese Translation Report On Golf Tournament Explanatory Guide Based On Semantic Translation And Communicative Translation Strategies

Golf,introduced from Ireland into China at the beginning of the twentieth century,is announced to be a new event in 2016 Olympic Games thus providing an opportunity for the development of golf.This article is based on the Chinese translation of Golf Tournament Explanatory Guide in Buenos Aires city,Argentina.In recent years,with the flourish of international sports events in China,the translation of sports terms have a certain significance for future sports events,and also promoting the exchanges and developments of sports information among different countries.Newmark believes that pertinent translation strategies should be adopted in different types of translations.The Golf Explanatory Guide,hereinafter referred to as the Guidance,is the main medium for conveying sport information.The guidance is a comprehensive text,partly on informative text and also supplemented by some appealing texts.It is in requirement of a clear delivery of professional sports information,as Golf development,Rules and Procedures,Competition Format,as well as other promotional texts such as urban tourism and humanities.It would be more accessible for everyone,like specialized players and trainers,aficionados,to gain desired information about local city’s transportation,climate conditions,traveling guidance,culture and so on.The author tries to analyze the text types and functions,so as to convey the information rigorously and truthfully,under the guidance of semantic translation by combining semantic translation with communicative translation strategies.The author would also give a full play to active thinking,selective analysis and creative expression by using translation methods from the aspects of lexicon and sentence pattern respectively,as"literal translation of abbreviations,proper noun,borrowed words,cultural terms",and also using methods of "reconstructed sentence","adding subject","simplified translation".Finally the author would list several examples to make a detailed description.In this way,the translation of the Guidance would be more in line with the Chinese readers’ habits and in agreement with expectations of targeted audiences,and also presenting diverse functions of the guidance.
