| The leaders’ speeches,an important component of political discourses in the political publicity works,are official discourses of great political significance.General Secretary Xi Jinping has made a series of important speeches at home and abroad since he took office.He widely uses Chinese classics,idiomatic phrases,buzzwords and figures of speech in speeches with a unique style,which are called "Xi-style Speeches" by overseas media.Therefore,to do a good job in translating General Secretary Xi Jinping’s speeches into English is of great significance to political publicity.Since the 19th National Congress of the CPC,socialism with Chinese characteristics has entered a new era,under which the translator also carried a new translation mission.A series of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important speeches is one of the most authoritative political texts,but academic circles still lack breadth,depth of the overall researches about it,which are mostly repetitive studies.With a view to the translator himself or herself,this thesis first applies Translator Behavior Criticism of Professor Zhou Lingshun to the critical analysis of the translation of a type of non-literary texts.With the help of "Truth-seeking-Utility-attaining" Evaluative Model of Continuum in the theory,the author specifically analyzes the translator behavior of translation of "Xi-style Speeches".This is a brand new attempt,which is expected to realize the comprehensiveness,objectivity and scientificity of translation criticism.The study finds that:Guided by political purpose,under the premise of "Truth-seeking"of Translator behavior,the translator tends to choose foreignizing translation,otherwise domesticating translation.The translation at the syntactic and rhetorical levels is about the style of the ST presented as the expressive text,so "seeking truth" is the translator’s first choice.At this point,the translation of political texts is closer to the type of literary text translation and the translator is a transmitter,who is seeking truth from original and author,attaining "literary truth-seeking";In the translation at the lexical level,because the proportion of expressions with Chinese characteristics are relatively large,sometimes holding on to keep the Chinese characteristics will increase comprehension impediment,which is difficult to realize the communicating effect to the maximum extent.So,the translator mainly use domesticated translation strategies.At this point,the translation of political texts is closer to the type of applied text translation and the translator is a elucidator,who is attaining utility for reader and society,as much as possible attaining"publicity-oriented utility-attaining".Therefore,the translator maintains a good balance between restoring the original style and striving for the reader’s understanding in his translation of "Xi-style Speeches",realizing the harmony between the TT and the ST.This study is divided into six chapters:the first chapter introduces the research background,questions,significance,and data collection;the second chapter is literature review,firstly introduces the research status of political discourse translation,then introduces the research status of "Xi-style Speeches";the third chapter is the theoretical basis,which gives a brief overview of the core ideas in Translator Behavior Criticism theory,and specifically introduces the "Truth-seeking-Utility-attaining",Evaluative Model of Continuum;with the help of "Truth-seeking-Utility-attaining" Evaluative Model of Continuum,the fourth chapter gives a descriptive and critical study on the bilingual text of a series of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important speeches,combined with qualitative and quantitative research methods and then draws a summary;the fifth chapter analyzes the causes of translator’s extra-translation behavior based on the conclusion of the previous chapter;the sixth chapter is the conclusion of the research,which clarifies the main findings and the lack of research. |
