With the gradual deepening of the cause of Chinese culture "going global" in recent years, remarkable achievements have been made in the out-going translation practice of Chinese native literature.Folk literature,as a typical characteristic of Chinese native literature,is presented by folk language to the public. Therefore,it is a significant topic for current translation researches to analyze the out-going translation of Chinese folk language. As China is the country with a long history of agricultural production,Chinese people have accumulated a lot of experience through the ages and expressed it in a concise form which is easy to be understood. These expressions have been passed on from mouth to mouth and gradually developed into agricultural proverbs, and now they become one of the major parts of Chinese folk language. With the sole Chinese agricultural proverbs translation work A Selected Collection of Chinese Agricultural Proverbs as the research object, the thesis integrates intra-translation and extra-translation factors and tries to analyze the truth-seeking and utility-attaining degrees of translator behaviors to confirm the translator behavioral tendency under the guidance of Professor Zhou Lingshun’s Translator Behavior Criticism and "Truth-seeking-Utility-attaining" evaluative model of continuum. It aims to provide effective references for the out-going translation practice of Chinese agricultural proverbs in the future. This thesis is divided into five chapters:the first chapter briefly introduces the translator Professor Cao Xinyu and A Selected Collection of Chinese Agricultural Proverbs, research background, research questions, research significance and the structure of the thesis;the second chapter is the literature review, which introduces the previous studies on proverbs translation, agricultural proverbs translation and out-going translation practice at home and abroad. The third chapter is the theoretical basis,Professor Zhou Lingshun’s Translator Behavior Criticism,intra-translation and extra-translation perspectives and the analysis tool of "Truth-seeking-Utility-attaining" evaluative model of continuum are clarified in this chapter. The fourth chapter is the main part with the book A Selected Collection of Chinese Agricultural Proverbs as the research object,it makes a comprehensive analysis of translator behaviors in Chinese agricultural proverbs of this book with intra-translation and extra-translation factors. The fifth chapter is the conclusion part which introduces the major findings, research problems and suggestions for the future study.Through the comprehensive analysis, this thesis has drawn the following conclusions:firstly, according to the scientific classifications for agricultural proverbs from the aspects of weather, farming time, planting and breeding,Professor Cao Xinyu selected 312 typical Chinese agricultural proverbs from the book 800 Sentences of Agricultural Proverbs compiled by China Agricultural Science and Education Foundation and took on the translation practice. All of these selected agricultural proverbs are concise with a distinct rhythm and rich in meaning, therefore the research text enjoys a high research value Secondly, this thesis makes a classification for the translation methods of agricultural proverbs based on the guidance of Translator Behavior Criticism and"Truth-seeking-Utility-attaining" evaluative model of continuum, and then it explores the influence of intra-translation and extra-translation factors on translator behaviors. From intra-translation perspective, the thesis mainly analyzes the influence of linguistic factors, which include the phonetic, lexical, rhetorical and syntactical aspects,on translator behaviors and behavioral tendencies. It has found that translator adopts foreignization to retain the original characteristics in lexical and rhetorical aspects and persists on truth-seeking for the true meaning;while the phonetic and syntactical features will be corresponded on the basis of the exact meaning transformation. From extra-translation perspective, translator behaviors are affected by many extra-translation factors such as cultural differences, readers, translator’s own views on translation and patrons. The translator chooses domestication to achieve the goal of utility-attaining for readers. What’s more, the translator provides an annotation for translation in detail to explain the cultural information that the original text contains and to achieve the goal of utility-attaining for readers. Therefore,it can be seen that there is a difference between the translator behavioral tendency in the out-going translation practice of Chinese agricultural proverbs and the regularity of traditional out-going translation practice. To some extent, the difference reflects the behavioral discrepancy between translator individuals.
