Umberto Giordano is an Italian composer in the late Romantic period. His writing style is mainly based on the theme of realism.Among his many works, the opera " Andrea Chénier" is the most famous. In this play, while following the writing style of realism opera, the composer is also good at combining the rigorous and exquisite music style of classical period with the fantasy lyric music style of romantic period The combination makes the opera form its unique artistic charm.Authentic opera is the theme of opera popular in Italy in the late 19 th century. It is mostly based on reality.By reflecting the tragic experience of the bottom people in the real society, expressing their sympathy and indignation towards the society, and exposing the cruelty and indifference of the society. The intense dramatic conflict and strong dramatic tension have increased the difficulty for the singer to control the entire opera. Not only does it require the singer to have a mature singing ability, but also a comprehensive grasp of the actual elements of the entire opera’s history, politics, and class. In order to accurately shape the characters and interpret the plot. This article uses the research methods of music performance, music philology and historical philology to combine history and class background with the two arias of "Gerald" in "Andrea Chénier","Nemico della patria?!" "Io t’aspettava! " As an example,to explore the practice of singing, analyze the reasons for Gérard’s emotional changes in "good" and "evil","rationality" and "sensibility" and how the composer uses musical language to make it the key to provoking contradictions in the play character. This paper is divided into three chapters. The first chapter is an overview of the composer’s life, writing style and realistic opera, and a brief review of the relevant historical background of the French Revolution. The second part is the analysis of the plot, the relationship between the characters and the personality of the characters. The third part is the analysis of Gerald’s aria "Nemico della patria?!" "Io t’aspettava! " The two arias explore how the composer interprets Gerald’s two sides through the music language and how to create this changeable character image in the actual singing, and summarize the difficulties and solutions in the actual singing. It is expected that this paper can help singers to sing and grasp the inner feelings of the characters, and provide guidance and reference for them to shape the image of the characters. It can also guide singers to grasp the characteristics of realistic opera creation and broaden the depth and breadth of understanding of realistic opera.
