In the 1980s,with the rapid development of science and technology, corpus linguistics gradually emerged and is now widely used in stylistic studies, namely corpus stylistics, which aims to describe language, writing and thought presentation with the corpus tool and make a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the stylistic features of text with an empirical approach.James Joyce,as a pioneer of modern novels,is a universally recognized novelist of"stream of consciousness." Ulysses is a novel that makes Joyce world-famous in the stream of consciousness novels.Numerous literary studies on Ulysses have been done for a long time, however, very few studies have been conducted by using quantitative methods of text and corpus analysis to a stylistic interpretation of Ulysses. This study looks at Ulysses from the corpus stylistic perspective and is conducted in a corpus stylistic theoretical context. It employs the tool which is called WordSmith Tools 4.0 for the analysis of the stream of consciousness of Ulysses. It is used to extract punctuation marks, keywords and clusters so as to reveal how stream of consciousness is reflected through the uses of punctuation marks, words and structures in Ulysses.Through comparing the use of punctuation marks, keywords and clusters in Ulysses and the 20th Century novels, the thesis analyzes the linguistic features in Ulysses. At the same time,it confirms the important role corpus stylistics can play in literary appreciation. In addition, this study offers a new perspective in literary criticism and understanding of literary works of stream of consciousness.
