Chinese literature contains rich cultural connotations.Strengthening the translation of Chinese literature is an efficient means of promoting the ‘go out’ of Chinese culture. As a subject in literary translation, literary translator influences the quality of intercultural communication.Hence, the research on literary translators’ intercultural competence is critical. However, the literature review shows that the study on the composition of literary translator’s intercultural competence is insufficient. With the guidance of Hornby’s translation view, this research studies the composition of literary translator’s intercultural competence by adopting mixed methods of theoretical research and case study. The research mainly contains the following contents: Firstly,Hornby’s translation view shows that translation is a cross-cultural event, which implies that the literary translator should have intercultural competence.Secondly, the research first studies the representative models of intercultural competence. Then, taking the principle of literary translation as an intercultural activity into account, this thesis constructs a model of literary translator’s intercultural competence, which includes five components: attitude, awareness, literature attainments, knowledge of culture and language, and translation skills.Thirdly,a case study of Mo Yan’s Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out translated by Goldblatt, which is well-known as a successful intercultural translation,is carried out.By analyzing typical translation examples in this work, the translator’s intercultural competence is reproduced from those five components to analyze their influence on the successful intercultural literary translation to verify the reasonableness of the constructed model. This research finds that on the one hand, the literary translator should adopt the translation view of treating literary translation as an intercultural activity and grasp intercultural competence correspondingly, that is,attitude, awareness, literature attainments, knowledge and translation skills. On the other hand, the constructed model can be applied to the teaching and training of literary translator’s intercultural competence to level up the quality of literary translation so as to promote Chinese culture to ‘go out’.
