A Study On The Ecological Dilemma In The Hungry Tide From The Perspective Of Postcolonial Ecocriticism | | Posted on:2022-10-20 | Degree:Master | Type:Thesis | | Country:China | Candidate:X Wang | Full Text:PDF | | GTID:2505306320455694 | Subject:Comparative Literature and World Literature | | Abstract/Summary: | PDF Full Text Request | | Amitav Ghosh(1956—)is one of the most influential Indo-English novelists of our time.The Hungry Tide is a postcolonial environmental novel published by Ghosh in 2005 and this work shows the ecological dilemma of the Sundarbans islands in India.The ecology of this area is sensitive and fragile,the residents,land,Bengal Tiger,Irrawaddy Dolphin and mangrove constitute the core of the environmental problems and ecosystem.This paper mainly focuses on the collide between the living status of impecunious Indian residents and western environmental conservation from the perspective of postcolonial ecocriticism.In this way,we can put ourselves in the center of ethical and aesthetic care to understand the miserable life situation of those displaced and slaughtered ethnic groups.Postcolonial Ecocriticism established its institutional status in the academic circles after the publication of Postcolonial Ecocriticism in 2010.It is the turn of postcolonialism towards "Ecocriticism" and is based on the concept of ecological justice to rethink the relationship between human and other non-human species.It can break the western dualistic thinking,so as to establish a sustainable environment for our future generations.The thesis contains three portions: introduction,main body and conclusion.The first part gives a recommend to The Hungry Tide.Then summarize the theory of Postcolonial Ecocriticism and its development process,and finally introduces the research status and the importance of the thesis.The main body in this paper is segmented into three chapters.The first chapter starts with the dual oppression of nature and human by the colonists in Sundarbans,showing the ecological expansion and ecological plunder suffered by the area,as well as the serious racist persecution suffered by the local residents.Then I will point out that even for the most marginalized citizens in the world,they should have the right to live with dignity.At the same time,formulating socially responsible environmental policies can protect the biodiversity of our planet.The second chapter focuses on the ecological dilemmas faced by Sundarbans and also criticizes the deprivation in the postcolonial world.I also discuss the imbalance between mankind and other non-human relevance.The precious Irrawaddy Dolphins and Bengal Tigers are disappearing under the exploitation of species;the refugees and women groups demand social justice,they are homeless,incompatible and forced to separate from the land;and the killing of vagrants by the government aggravates the conflict between people.The third chapter analyzes the environmental problems in the novel and the origin of hunger,and tries to seek solutions.Survival is the primary concern for both human and non-human inhabitants of Sundarbans,therefore,the principle of survival first must be adhered to.Secondly,only by transcending the paradigm of ecocentrism can we change the terrible conditions of the paupers in the third world and the unbalanced living environment.The conclusion concludes the full text and points out that it is very necessary to care for the exploitation and oppression of colored people,minorities,and poor residents in human society.We are responsible for the healthy development of social ecology,because cultural concern and ecological concern are by no means opposed to each other,on the contrary,they can have a dialogue on the basis of fully respecting the ecological reality of different regions until they coexist harmoniously. | | Keywords/Search Tags: | Amitav Ghosh, The Hungry Tide, Postcolonial Ecocriticism, Ecocentrism | PDF Full Text Request | Related items |
