| With the rapid development of society,people’s life rhythm becomes more and more rapid.And at the same time,people face more pressure,suffer some psychological problems and even suffer from the mental illness.While in China,people know and concern little about mental health.In recent years,with the enhancement of China’s comprehensive strength,the economic,political and cultural exchanges between China and the West have become increasingly close,and some good books about health in Western countries are pouring into the Chinese book market.In this context,translation,as a bridge between two languages,plays an important role in the cultural exchange and mutual learning.However,because of the differences of Chinese and English cultural backgrounds and expression habits,there are different in language characteristics between Chinese and English.The structure of Chinese sentences is loose.There are many short sentences while there are many long and complex sentences in English.So,the translation of long and complex sentences has always been the focus in English-Chinese translation.This translation practice report is based on the second chapter of The Well-Gardened Mind: The Restorative Power of Nature written by Stuart-Smith and mainly focuses on the translation of long and complex English sentences.Through the translation of the book,the purpose is to make the translator have a deeper understanding of Skopos Theory as well as analyze and study how to deal with the translation of long and complex sentences skillfully under the guidance of Skopos Theory so as to make the translation more faithful to the original text and eliminate the linguistic differences to a certain extent.It also meets the translation needs of long and difficult sentences in this report and enables readers to understand the therapeutic effect of gardening,to reduce stress and promote mental health through gardening and to make more people understand the benefits of gardening culture to personal restoration and help more people who are suffering from mental illness to get rid of it and return to their normal life one day.Under the guidance of Skopos Theory,the translator analyzes the influence of its three rules.They are Skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule.During the translation,the translator combines the theory with translation practice,and chooses proper translation strategy and techniques including addition,omission,conversion,division,inversion,free translation and comprehensive translation to analyze and deal with long and complex sentences.The translator finds that it is useful to make the translation coherent,to achieve the goal of readability and be faithful to the original text with the help of Skopos Theory.Through this translation practice,the translator expects that her ability can be elevated;besides,the translator expects that such this kind of books like gardening culture and its restoration to people’s mental health can be known by more and more people,and hopes the translation can provide readers with a new perspective to understand that green nature has a direct and effective influence on human beings and to help people seek a healthy spiritual life.By writing this report,the translator hopes to understand Skopos Theory thoroughly not only in the theory but also in practice.The translator hopes her research on this related theme and field could bring reference value for more scholars. |
