| This translation report focuses on the study on the strategies for translating English nominalization in the source text The Invention of Surgery written by the world-known surgeon David Schneider. It is an account of the history of medicine, exploring the development of western surgery in depth and detail with a lot of professional information and historical events. The translation process encountered many difficulties, such as medical terms, long sentences, and nominalizations. It is worth noticing that the author of the book employs a large number of nominalized expressions to condense rich historical information, which brings great challenges to the translation. This report takes the translation of nominalization from English into Chinese as the study point and reviews the research on nominalization and related translation strategies by scholars at home and abroad.Previous scholars and translators adopt different strategies for translating nominalization on the basis of its various structural classifications. However,it is found that one specific translation strategy does not only correlate with one type of nominalization, and the adoption of one strategy can be feasible to more than one category of nominalization. From this it seems that the necessity and significance of classifying nominalization structures to choose corresponding translation strategies remains to be discussed. It is believed that the adoption of strategy for translating nominalization should not be confined in its structural classification. After comparing and analyzing the translation strategies of nominalization proposed by domestic scholars, this report suggests that the adoption of strategies for translating nominalization should be considered from the perspectives of its structures and functions, the norms of Chinese expression, and the context of both source and target texts. On this basis, the thesis sums up four strategies for translating English nominalization:literal translation, conversion of word class, amplification, and division,in an effort to provide more fresh examples for translation studies in this area. |
