The environmental issue is getting increasingly intense in the world today.Global climate change has become a hot topic in international community.Selecting the article of Anthropic Thinking about Global Climate Change(Chapter 2)as the source text for translation practice is out of concern for the intense issue of climate change.Through translation practice, this report’s author hopes to provide an reference for the translation of popular science and technology texts of environmental science and meanwhile to deliver study findings of the source text that filled with humanistic and objectively scientific spirits to Chinese readers. This report is targeted to enhance public knowledge about global climate change, and build their awareness of environmental conservation. The source text belongs to popular science and technology texts of environmental science, which has the textual characteristics such as accuracy, objectivity and conciseness of science and technology texts, but also contains the linguistic features of the subject of environmental science.Under the guidance of Catford’s translation shifts theory,a case study of the problems encountered in translation practice is conducted from the lexical and grammatical shifts of level shifts and the three aspects of category shifts, namely structure, class, and unit shifts. Finally, through practice the author found that in the process of translating such texts, translators should concentrate on the shifts of singular-plural nouns and different tenses between English and Chinese;the structure shifts of active and passive voices, affirmative and negative sentences, and different component positions;the class shifts of adjectives into nouns, prepositions into verbs, etc.;and the shifts of units between sentences, clauses, phrases and words in the text.At the same time, the translation techniques such as amplification, omission and compensation should be combined with the conventional shifts to achieve a better translation effect.
