| This is a Chinese-English translation practice report which is based on a service contract document when the author worked in a gas-fired power plant in Africa.With the development of science,technology and recent changes in people’s lifestyle,service contracts have gradually become an indispensable part in production activities of human society.Moreover,service contract translation,as informative text translation,falls within the ambit of legal text translation.Therefore,the information in the target text should be as objective,formal,meticulous and authoritative as the source text.After knowing the features and translation purposes of service contracts,Skopos theory,a functionalist translation theory,is chosen as the theoretical guidance to accomplish this translation practice report.Firstly,this report introduces the background of this service contract project,and then analyzes text features of the service contract from the perspective of vocabulary,syntax,and discourse in the field of gas power plants.Secondly,under the guidance of the three rules of Skopos theory,a further analysis of translation process on the basis of the above-mentioned aspects is carried out respectively.On the lexical level,translation strategies like synthesis and derivation are adopted under the skopos rule to ensure accuracy and professionalism of vocabulary.On the syntactic level,in order to make sentences read coherently and logically,translation strategies like amplification translation,literal translation and reverse translation are chosen under the coherence rule and the fidelity rule.On the textual level,translation strategies like explanatory notes are applied under the skopos rule and the fidelity rule to ensure the intertextual coherence.All in all,this report is meant to explore the text features and translation strategies to address Chinese-English translation of service contracts in the field of gas power plants under the scientific guidance of Skopos theory and eventually to reach the goal of combining theory with practice. |
