This translation practice report translated and discussed the first six chapters of The Book of Boy.This novel was written by Catherine Gilbert Murdock,a well-known best-selling American writer.It told a story of a mysterious "Pilgrim" and a "Boy" who traveled long distances to find the seven treasures of Saint Peter.This book narrated the boy Bois from being ridiculed to embarking on an adventurous journey to achieve self-salvation.It aimed to provide spiritual inspiration and guidance for young readers.At the same time,the book could also let readers appreciate a wealth of cultural background knowledge.The source text is a literary text.The translator aimed to make the translation not merely retain its beauty and unique artistry,but more accessible to children and young readers.On the basis of Nida’s functional equivalence theory,the translator adopted many translation skills such as provincial translation,transliteration,and annotation.This translation practice made the translator deeply feel the complexity of the translation process of a novel,especially the translation strategies choose for children’s literature.After this translation practice,the translator found many shortcomings in basic language skills and accumulated valuable experience for future translation.This translation report contains five sections.The first chapter is the introduction,including the background,text description,the purpose of the task,and the layout of the report.The second chapter is the translation procedures,including pre-translation,translation process and quality control.The third chapter introduces the functional equivalence theory and the application in literary translation.The fourth chapter is the case analysis,including the translation of the title,the use of reduplicated words,lexical equivalence and syntactic equivalence.Based on functional equivalence theory,the translator used a variety of translation methods and translation strategies to achieve an accuracy as well as readability.The fifth chapter is the conclusion,including the translator’s gains in the translation process and the limitations of this report.
