Charles Dickens was a well-known British writer in the nineteenth century. He was recognized as "the most outstanding novelist of the Victorian era".His works reflected the social conditions of the United Kingdom in the mid-nineteenth century and conveyed his deep compassion for the poor in society. He described the fog over Britain with delicate brushstrokes and became the writer of the fog.Dickens once said that fog was originally formed by rising water vapor, but such pure fog has drifted to the London countryside. The fog floating in London is a mixture of industrial exhaust gas and natural fog. This article explores the specific forms of fog described in Dickens’ novels.Based on the text,it explains the multiple symbolic connotations of fog and the reason and significance of fog writing in Dickens’ novels. The article includes three parts:introduction, body and conclusion:The introduction part introduces Dickens’ literary creation, the research content and innovations of the theses, and the status quo of research on Dickens’ works by scholars at home and abroad. The first chapter mainly clarifies the various forms of fog in Dickens’ novels.According to the original text and translation, the author divides the fog described in Dickens’ novels into three main forms:mist, smoke and fog.In the novel, the mist described plays a role in rendering the environment and emphasizing emotions. In the process of creating characters, the author connects people’s good and evil, destiny and the smoke as the background of the story. As an element of the activity, the smoke participates in the judgment of human nature. The dense fog isolates the city from the nature, with ominous signs of an irreversible catastrophe for human survival. The second chapter mainly explains the multiple symbolic connotations of fog in Dickens’novels.Under certain circumstances, the fog that appears in the novel is no longer an objective natural fog.Dickens gave the fog unique thoughts, feelings and cultural experience. The fog symbolizes the survival dilemma of human beings. The life of poor people in the fog is becoming more and more difficult.Walking alone in the fog, even their life path is lost in the fog.The fog symbolizes the chaotic world under the legal net.The British bourgeois judicial system is like a cloud of fog, which makes people living there into confusion.St.Paul’s Cathedral is the first cathedral in the UK,and it is also the spiritual pillar of the people.St.Paul’s Cathedral is shrouded and eroded by fog, which also symbolizes the loss of religious beliefs of some British people. The third chapter mainly explores the reasons why Dickens wrote fog in his novels. The United Kingdom is an island country surrounded by the sea.The humid climate makes London foggy.Due to industrial development and the needs of residents, the United Kingdom burns a lot of coal and emits a lot of smoke.Dickens was familiar with the fog that enveloped London, and because of his fusion of romantic and realistic artistic personality,he wrote various forms of fog in his novels. The fourth chapter mainly reveals the social significance and aesthetic value of writing fog in Dickens’ novels from three aspects:the criticism of Victoria’s heyday, the worry about the urban environment, and the shaping of the unique London fog.The conclusion part summarizes the viewpoints of this thesis and emphasizes the meaning of fog writing in Dickens’ novels.
