Research On Chinese Government Work Report From The Perspective Of Catford’s Theory Of Translation Shifts

This article examines the Chinese-Korean translations of the 2019 Government Work Report and its dynastic translation from the perspective of the Catford’s Translation Shifts Theory,using research methods such as documentary research,case study method and comparative analysis.Catford’s translation shifts theory is a theory proposed by the famous British linguist and translation theorist John Cunnison Catford in 1965,who believed that meaning can be transmitted across languages,and that deviation from formal equivalence in the process of moving from the source language to the target language is known as shift.Catford’s translation shift theory is carefully classified and practical.Therefore,taking the 2019 Government Work Report and its dynastic translation as the object of study,this paper analyses the translation methods and techniques of the translation text at the lexical and syntactic levels from the perspective of Catford’s translation conversion theory,combining the stylistic characteristics of political papers,and analyses the translation methods and techniques from four aspects: hierarchical conversion,structural conversion,unit conversion and category conversion,summarises and concludes the scientific and effective translation strategies used in the translation text,and explores the application of Catford’s The theoretical significance and practical value of Catford’s theory of translation transformation in the translation of political essays,proving the theory’s strong guidance and usefulness for the translation of political essays.This will not only help people to deepen their understanding of Catford’s translation transition theory,but also help to broaden the scope of its application in the translation of political papers.The Government Work Report is a report made by the Premier of the State Council at the National People’s Congress and Political consultative conference,which includes a review of the work of our government over the past year,as well as plans for the year ahead in the areas of politics,economy,culture,ecology,education and so on.China’s State Administration of Foreign Languages lists seven minority languages-Tibetan,Yi,Korean,Kazakh,Mongolian,Zhuang and Uyghur-among the commonly used working languages,and each year’s Government Work Report is translated into these seven minority languages for reading by people in minority areas.The ethnic translations of the Government Work Report enable people in minority areas to gain an accurate understanding of the current political,economic,cultural and social developments in China,and to learn as soon as possible about the major guidelines and policies of the state,which is conducive to the implementation and enforcement of policies in minority areas,enhances ethnic cohesion and policy implementation,and plays an important role in strengthening ethnic unity,safeguarding national unity and promoting social,economic and cultural development.This thesis focuses on the following four aspectsThis thesis focuses on the following four aspects of research: the first part introduces the purpose,significance,research objects and ideas of the study,and collates and analyses prior research;the second part introduces the emergence,development,basic content and characteristics of the political thesis and the applicability of the theory in the translation of political theses.The third part of this thesis focuses on the four aspects of hierarchical transformation,structural transformation,category transformation and unit transformation,and gives examples to analyse in detail the application of the theory in the 2019 Government Work Report;the fourth part summarises the important role of Catford’s translation shifts theory in guiding the translation of political papers and the shortcomings of this study.
