| Culture is the most important spiritual content of a group or a country.A cultural symbol is a condensed form of culture that is the carrier of culture. In a modern society where globalisation is advancing, the countries of the world are increasingly interconnected. In the modern world of globalisation, countries around the world are increasingly interconnected.Under this trend of globalisation, cultural exchanges and penetration between China and the West are gradually increasing(Xiangyang Huang,2007).In the classroom, the four great tragedies of Shakespeare and the Four Great Classical Novels are brought into dialogue across the room;In the music,Western instruments such as the saxophone and violin are intertwined with the traditional erhu and pipa.Research has shown that individuals from different groups develop an attentional bias towards their own group’s culture(Mei Jing,2018).So,when facing the two familiar cultural symbols of China and the west, which cultural symbols do individuals prefers to process first? Is this attentional bias consistent with behavioral and eye-movement indicators? In addition, what are the characteristics of individuals’ attentional bias towards cultural symbols for different social interaction contexts, where the context gives meaning to the symbols? To address the above questions, this study used university students as subjects to explore the relationship between group cultural symbols and attention, and the intervention of imaginal exposure on the attentional bias of cultural symbols in a competitive situation, based on social interaction theory, while incorporating eye-tracking techniques. This study is divided into three parts:In Experiment 1,focused on whether individuals differed with their attentional processing of Chinese and Western cultural symbols in terms of both behavioral and eye movement.indicators.The results show that, compared with western cultural symbols, the subjects’ reaction time to Chinese cultural symbols is shorter and the number of fixation points, fixation time and its proportion are more.Based on Experiment 1,experiment 2 further explored the influence of social interaction situation on the attentional bias of cultural symbols. The experiment adopted a mixed experimental design of 2(social interaction situation:cooperation, competition)× 2(cultural symbols:Chinese,Western). The social interaction situation was an inter subject variable, and the type of cultural symbols was an inter subject variable. The results show that, there is no significant difference in reaction time, fixation counts, dwell time and their proportion between Chinese cultural symbols and Western cultural symbols in the cooperative situation. But in the competitive situation, compared with western cultural symbols, the subjects had shorter reaction time and more fixation points and fixation time to Chinese cultural symbols. In the third experiment,we further explored the inhibition of attentional bias to cultural symbols by using a mixed experimental design of 2(imaginal exposure intervention:yes,no)× 2(cultural symbols:Chinese,Western),with imaginal exposure intervention as a between-subjects variable and cultural symbol type as a within-subjects variable. The results showed that after the intervention in imaginary contact, the subjects’ reaction time of Western cultural symbols became shorter, and the fixation count, dwell time and their proportion became heavier. The results show that:attention bias of cultural symbols is stable and consistent in behavioral and eye movement indicators, and Chinese subjects allocate more attention resources to Chinese cultural symbols.Social interaction situation has an important impact on the attention bias of cultural symbols:in the cooperative situation,Chinese subjects allocate attention resources equally to Chinese and Western cultural symbols; However,in the competitive situation,Chinese subjects have significant attentional bias towards Chinese cultural symbols, which is manifested in the difficulty of attentional relief. However, after the intervention of imaginary contact, the attention bias of Chinese subjects to cultural symbols in the competitive situation changed significantly, and their attention time and attention times to Western cultural symbols increased significantly, that is,more attention resources were allocated to Western cultural symbols. |
