With the rapid development of science and technology, the ecological crises caused by industrial revolution are becoming increasingly serious.Ecolinguistics,as an interdisciplinary subject of natural science and humanities, can be used to expose the ecological crises and change people’s attitude towards nature.Ecolinguistics focuses on the survival and development of language and the influence exerted on the environment.Stibbe(2015:1-35)classifies discourse into beneficial discourse, destructive discourse and ambivalent discourse.Pastoral poetry belongs to beneficial discourse. This kind of discourse calls on people to love, respect, protect and live in harmony with nature. Most of the studies on Eco-discourse in China focus on the news, advertising, speeches, and ecological assessment reports,or on the comparative analysis of the English versions of Chinese classical works from the perspective of ecolinguistics, but few on the Ecological Discourse Analysis of Chinese pastoral poetry. Therefore,it is of great significance to analyze pastoral poetry from the perspective of ecolinguistics and explore its ecological wisdom.Tao Yuanming and Wang Wei(henceforth referred to as Tao and Wang)are both leaders of Chinese pastoral poetry, and they share the same experience of seclusive life.Their ecological thoughts are alike in some aspects, but there are many differences as well.Based on the framework of M.A.K.Halliday’s Systemic Functional Grammar and adopting the approach of functional discourse analysis, this paper analyzes the transitivity systems of Tao’s and Wang’s pastoral poems. The purpose of this research is to explore how the poets interpret their ecological views with language.According to the Ecological Trichotomy proposed by the Chinese scholar Lu Shuyuan, the two poets’ecological views are compared from three dimensions:natural ecology, social ecology and spiritual ecology in an attempt to appeal people to love, protect nature and establish fine ecological views. This paper will answer the following three questions:(1)How are the different types of processes distributed in realizing the ecological thoughts?(2)What are the functions of transitivity system in both Tao’s and Wang’s pastoral poems?(3)What are the similarities and differences between Tao’s and Wang’s natural ecological thoughts, social ecological thoughts and spiritual ecological thoughts?Study shows that the distribution and function of transitivity system are different in the poems of the two poets. In terms of natural ecology,Tao and Wang can fully appreciate the value of nature and highly respect the laws of nature, but the roles played by them in nature are different.Tao is a participator of nature while Wang is an admirer of nature. In terms of social ecology, both Tao and Wang advocate the harmonious relationship between people. But Tao also reveals the corruption of society in his poems. In terms of spiritual ecology,Tao is materially poor but spiritually rich, while Wang pays more attention to the construction of a spiritual world away from worldly disturbances. From the perspective of Systemic Functional Grammar, this paper explores the similarities and differences between Tao’s and Wang’s ecological thoughts in order to better understand their works and tap their ecological wisdom,so as to provide important enlightenment for the construction of ecological civilization and the realization of sustainable development. In addition, this paper provides a new perspective for poetry discourse analysis and enriches the research of Ecological Discourse Analysis.
