Toni Morrison,the first African American woman writer to win the Nobel Prize in literature in 1993,is one of the greatest writers in modern and contemporary American literature.Morrison has created a great number of works throughout her life,and her creation involves a variety of genres.Especially her novels have been announced as the most influential works in the world.God Help the Child was published in 2015 and attracted much attention once it was published.Critics have researched the novel from different angles and have achieved fruitful research results.Studies on its multi-themes,language style and narrative strategies are discussed thoroughly.However,so far,only few domestic critics have interpreted the novel from ethical literary criticism.Therefore,based on ethical literary criticism,this thesis would study the protagonist Bride’ s ethical growth.Under the guidance of the three dimensions of man and society,man and others,man and self,the thesis would restore the historical context of the novel and apply terms like ethical environment,ethical identity and ethical consciousness to analyze the characteristics of the protagonist Bride’s growth.At the level of man and society,the thesis closely links Bride ’s ethical environment and ethical identity to summarize Bride ’s growth under the background of community,family and white culture in order to analyze its impact on her identity as a daughter and lover.At the level of man and others,the thesis focuses on the deconstruction of Bride’s ethical consciousness.From the collision of cognition and behaviors with others in her life,the thesis explores the possibility of Bride’s awakening of ethical consciousness.At the level of man and self,the thesis concentrates on the reconstruction of Bride’s ethical consciousness.From her constant pursuit of the truth behind difficulties,the thesis digs out the necessity of Bride’s awakening of ethical consciousness.After an in-depth interpretation of Bride’s ethical growth,the thesis firmly believes that with others’ help and self-efforts,one can get rid of the influence of the environment and identity,and become a truly healthy person with the capacity of going to love.
