| The issue of mourning clothes of Chinese Buddhism refers to the dispute between Chinese monks in successive dynasties on whether Buddhists should wear mourning clothes. It is an issue arising from the conflict and integration between Indian Buddhism and Chinese traditional culture. The first chapter of this paper mainly combs the rejection of Buddhist mourning clothes by Chinese Buddhist monks before Song and Yuan Dynasties.Taking the last words of ZhiZhe,HuiNeng,XueFengYiCun,YunMenWenYan,BuKongSanZang,DaoXuan and YiJing as examples, this paper discusses how Chinese Buddhist monks before the Song and Yuan Dynasties opposed Buddhists wearing mourning clothes. The second chapter mainly sorts out the acceptance of Buddhist mourning clothes by Chinese Buddhist monks before the Song and Yuan Dynasties, focusing on four Buddhist classics, namely,Shi Shi funeral rites,Zenghui Records,Beishan Records, and Wushan Collection. Both Shi Shi funeral rites and Zenghui Records have been lost, but many later works have quoted them, from which we can see that the author advocated that Buddhists can wear mourning clothes.Beishan Records and Wushan Collection have a detailed discussion on how Buddhists wear mourning clothes, but they have slightly different regulations on Buddhist mourning clothes. The above several Buddhist classics have reconciled the relationship between Confucianism and Buddhism and made a certain contribution to the development of Chinese Buddhism. The third chapter mainly discusses the mourning dress system in the Buddhist rules of Song and Yuan Dynasties."Chan Yuan Qing Gui" is the first of its kind in the Song and Yuan Dynasties, and later "Cong Lin Jiao Ding Qing Gui Zong Yao" are based on it,expanded and revised."Zen Yuan Qing Gui" slightly mentions Buddhist mourning clothes. After "Cong Lin Jiao Ding Qing Gui Zong Yao","Can Lin Bei Yong Qing Gui",and "Chi Xiu Bai Zhang Qing Gui" the regulations on Buddhist mourning clothes become more and more detailed, and the Buddhist mourning clothes become institutionalized and ritualized, which marks the end of the debate on Buddhist mourning clothes. After the Song and Yuan Dynasties, many monks still forbade their disciples to wear mourning clothes. In addition, from the text content of the Song and Yuan regulations, the provisions on mourning clothes in the regulations are flexible to a certain extent, such as the neglect of the mourning time of monks, and the re-discussion of whether to wearing mourning clothes or not.To some extent,it shows that the creation of Buddhist regulations in the Song and Yuan Dynasties was meant to deal with the imperial court. This reveals that in the process of localization,Buddhism does not blindly accept the local culture, but integrates in the conflict and develops in the fusion, and the critical spirit runs through the whole process. The discussion on the issue of Buddhist mourning clothing has a certain significance for the relationship between the three religions and the sinicization of Buddhism in the current study of Chinese Buddhism. It can help us better grasp the influence of Confucian ritual system on the development of Buddhism and grasp the development process of Buddhism in China in the dynamic interaction between Confucianism and Buddhism. |
