Reading is an important part of English learning.Students can acquire cultural knowledge and necessary social information through reading.The English Curriculum Standard points out that improving the students’ reading ability is one of the main English teaching goals.No matter in the entrance examination or in daily life,the status of reading is becoming more and more important.However,it is difficult for students to improve their English reading level quickly,since the traditional English teaching method focuses on grammar and words rather than ability cultivation.In recent years,as one of the teaching methods,task-based teaching method is widely used in the teaching practice of our country.It regards students as the subject in the class activities.While teachers design teaching tasks reasonably according to both the teaching objectives and the students’ actual language levels,and guide students to complete the tasks step by step.Based on the above situations,the author compares the characteristics of task-based teaching method with traditional teaching method,discusses the important position and role of reading in the class.Finally,the author puts forward a series of suitable suggestions for teachers to carry out English reading in the secondary vocational school.In this paper,the author conducted a detailed study on the following two questions.Question one: To what extent can task-based approach improve students’ intrinsic interest in learning English reading in the secondary vocational school?Question two: To what extent can task-based approach affect student’s English reading level in the secondary vocational school?The author uses questionnaires,test papers and interviews to investigate the validity of the task-based teaching method.Pre-test scores show that no obvious difference lies between EC and CC.However,after 16 weeks,the evidence shows that the performance of EC is superior to that of CC in both post-test and the feedback on students’ English reading interest.To a large extent,the task-based approach can increase students’ intrinsic interest in learning English reading and improve student’s English reading level in the secondary vocational school.It is shown that the task-based teaching method is more effective than the traditional teaching method.Therefore,in English reading class,task-based teaching method has more teaching significance.
