As a historical documentary work,China in Convulsion mainly introduces the Boxer Movement and the Qing Dynasty from 1860 to 1901.Although its author is an American missionary in China,he records this period of history from his unique third-person perspective and in rigorous language, which supplies precious materials for future generations to learn about the Boxer Movement. This project report is on the basis of Chapters Seven and Eight of this book. These two chapters cover the background of the outbreak of the Boxer Movement, including the commercial intrusion of foreigners and the territorial aggression of the separatist powers after the Sino-Japanese War.Guided by Skopos theory, this project report provides a profound analysis on the major issues and difficulties from three aspects of vocabulary, sentences and discourse.Specifically, the author adopts the established translated names and converts parts of speech when translating proper nouns and some troublesome words in the original text, uses methods like following the original syntactic order, negation and reinventing sentence structures when dealing with long English sentences, utilizes reference and substitution when achieving discourse cohesion. The author expects to offer some reference and recommendations for the future research on historical documentary translation through this project report.
