The importance of reading teaching in the present primary English teaching has constantly increased and cultivating English reading ability is the priority for English teaching.But in the current primary school English reading teaching,teachers usually devote excessive time in the comprehension of sentences and words and teaching of grammar while cultural teaching has not been given adequate attention.Students usually have deviation in understanding articles owing to the cultural difference between China and the west,leading to reading barriers.As a consequence,students cannot truly understand the content of articles,hence affecting the reading effects.Thus,in reading teaching,teachers should optimize their teaching means to explore the connotations of texts,help students better form the concept of diversified culture,and improve their cross-cultural communication competence,thereby boosting students’ reading competence.This thesis takes critical reading teaching theory,cross-cultural communication theory,and dialogue teaching theory as the basis,and adopts such methods as questionnaire,interview,testing,and observation.In a period of four months,the author conducts action research on Class One Grade Six of S Primary School and mainly delves into three questions: Firstly,what is the current status of the English reading ability of primary school students? Secondly,what are the strategies for enhancing the English reading ability of primary school students under the perspective of cross-cultural awareness? Thirdly,can these strategies enhance the English reading ability of primary school students? Based on the above three questions,the author conducts three rounds of action research.After three rounds of action research,the author conducts a questionnaire survey,interview conducted and testing again.Based on routine classroom observation and the interview conducted after the first two rounds of action research,the author conducts an analysis and the analysis results show that the cultivation of cross-cultural awareness has enhanced the English reading ability of primary school students.This is specifically shown in: Firstly,the cultivation of cross-cultural awareness has improved the English reading interest of primary school students.Besides,the cultivation of cross-cultural awareness has enhanced the inferential comprehension ability for the English reading of primary school students.Lastly,in the teaching of English reading,the cross-cultural awareness of primary school students has been enhanced.Based on the above research outcome,the author proposes the following suggestions: compare Chinese and foreign culture and enrich teaching materials;create interaction scenarios and diversify teaching forms;change the evaluation subjects and conduct group cooperation;adopt mind mapping,build reading racks,and organize activities with cultural features so that reading can shift from the classroom to outside the classroom.It is hoped that through the research on improving the primary school English reading teaching ability,the thesis can help other English educators care about cultural teaching,adopt these means in the primary school English classroom teaching,and boost the double increase of English reading teaching quality and effects.
