A Report On Translation Of Bidding Document For The New York City Subway Project(Excerpt)

With the advancement of The Belt and Road Initiative,Chinese enterprises have increasingly participated in the international competitive bidding activities.As a basic document for enterprises to participate in international bidding activities,bidding documents are an important basis for bidders to understand the bidding contents,prepare tender documents and engage in the bidding.Therefore,the accuracy,standardization and strictness of the translation of bidding documents play a crucial role in international bidding activities.This practice report is based on New York Subway Bidding Documents,the assigned English-Chinese translation project during the author’s internship.Chapter one Important notice to proposers and chapter two Request for proposal overview and procedures of the document are selected as the source text.Under the guidance of Reiss’ s text typology theory,the author thoroughly analyzes the linguistic structure and characteristics of the original text,and further analyzes the typical features of informative text and expressive text in the bidding document at lexical,syntax and discourse levels.Combined with typical cases,in lexical level,the author strictly adopts the standard translation of professional terms,archaic words and modal verbs in the bidding documents.In terms of syntax,the author adopts the translation methods of shift and combination for different types of texts.As for the discourse,the division technique is utilized to avoid the complicated structure of long and difficult sentences in English,striving to accurately convey the original information in the document and achieve the strictness and standardization of legal texts.Through this translation practice,the author finds that Reiss’ s text typology theory has an important guiding role in the translation methods and skills of informative text and expressive text.The translation of bidding documents requires translators to improve the theoretical reserves and master more professional knowledge of the bidding industry.Meanwhile,the translation process and solutions presented in the report can provide references for the English-Chinese translation of bidding documents with similar texts.
