With the development of society,the status of English and English education are increasingly being concerned by society.In English education,reading is an elementary language skill,which is the basic way for students to learn to input knowledge.Therefore,in language learning,developing reading skills and strategies is one of the basic abilities that learners must master.Moreover,it is an important part of the examination.Hence,More and more teachers in junior high school are aware of the importance of reading in the exam.However,the actual situation in Xin Jiang is not ideal,and the current reading ability of junior high school students is also not optimistic.Students’ interest in learning,attitudes,and test scores in the classroom are not satisfactory for the shortcomings in the traditional teaching such as the single teaching method,the dull classroom atmosphere,and difficulty for stimulating students’ learning interest.All of these cannot meet the requirements of the new curriculum reform for English learning.Therefore,it is imperative to adopt a scientific teaching method in view of the shortcomings of the traditional teaching model and the present learning situation of the students.The PBL(problem-based learning)teaching model is an effective way to improve the above shortcomings.It regards students as the learning center and enables students to understand target knowledge,develop learning strategies,and apply what they have learned.In addition,problem-based teaching model plays an important role in establishing students’ independent learning,cooperation awareness,cultivating their innovative ability and establishing a new relationship between teachers and students.The PBL teaching model was implemented late in China.Although many scholars have made some achievements in theory and practice,they are still lacking in the field of junior high school English teaching.Therefore,the author uses the PBL teaching method to conduct junior high school English reading teaching in No.68 Middle School in Urumqi.Eight(5)class is experimental class.Eight(8)class is controlled class.The research questions are: 1.Can PBL teaching model improve junior high school students’ English reading grades more effectively? 2.Can PBL teaching model increase the interests of students’ English reading learning?After a half-year experiment,the author used the SPSS17.0 data statistics software to make the average scores of students’ pretest and post-test and the independent sample T test towards their scores between EC and CC.Besides,theauthor also analyzed the results of pre-and post-questionnaire and interview then arrived at the following conclusions: 1.PBL Teaching methods can more effectively improve the English reading grades of junior high school students;2.PBL teaching method can improve the English reading interest of junior high school students.Through the results of experiment,the conclusions are reached that the problembased teaching method has its own advantage comparing with the traditional teaching.Using problem-based teaching methods to teach English reading is of some help to junior high school students’ English reading ability and comprehensive ability.
