Being research-oriented,academic texts are quite different from the literary works or popular reading books. With the rapid development of globalization, the cross-border academic communication has been more frequent and, under this background, the translation of academic texts is becoming increasingly significant in the international academic field. As a result, the translation of academic text has made a leapfrog achievement in terms of both quantity and quality. This is an E-C translation report based on an excerpt from an academic masterpiece of Essential Concepts of Cross-Cultural Management. The book mainly tells that with the deepening momentum of globalization in the modern era,how managers should be involved in the alien societies and armed with cross-cultural skills.Against the background of globalization when the global trade prevails, the E-C translation of this book can help Chinese people have a deep understanding of the essential concepts of cross-cultural management, which, indeed,is of great academic value. Moreover,as an information-oriented text,it has the characteristics of being professional and objective. In this report, the author has selected the 3rd chapter of the book as the translation material, with its language style featuring formality, preciseness and complexity. Also,in the whole process of the translation, the author has encountered some difficulties which are, first of all, proper nouns and abstract nouns at the word level and, then long sentences and passive sentences at the sentence level. In this translation report, through the combination of some certain analyses on the translation samples and of exploring the word and sentence translation difficulties, the author has adopted, under the guidance of the Skopos Theory, the related translation methods and skills. For example, the methods and skills of literal translation, choice of extended meanings, combination of transliteration and free translation, and addition are used to translate abstract nouns. The skills of division and inversion are adopted to translate long sentences. The skills of conversion of passive-voiced sentences into active-voiced sentences or sentences with no subject are employed to translate the passive-voiced sentences.By taking advantage of them, the author aims to translate the original text in a proper manner,so as to solve the problems involved.Hopefully, this report can set a reference for the translation of similar academic works.
