| After the opium war in 1840,the intellectuals of the late Qing dynasty began to go into the west one after another in order to save the country and seek for the way of its survival,to observe the "Taixi",who had been despised by the "Chinese people",who defeated the "Chinese empire" in several wars. The western world is the place of modern civilization, and the exposure of the late Qing people born of traditional civilization in such a place must be a state of incompatibility.Travel abroad in the late Qing dynasty shows the collision between traditional civilization and modern civilization, and also records the complicated mentality of travelers in the late Qing dynasty who accepted western civilization, and the difficult course of the Chinese people towards the world.Based on the theory of travel culture and the basic idea of body perceiving space and space shaping concept, this paper explores the psychological track of late Qing dynasty travelers’ acceptance of western culture from the perspective of their body perception. The thesis is divided into three chapters:The first chapter explores the ways in which travelers in the late Qing dynasty "saw" the west, the cultural psychology behind it,and the cognitive changes after being "seen" by westerners. The late Qing dynasty travelers just entered the modern western society, because of the deep-rooted traditional concepts and the lack of new experience, they could not cope with the new things, and only took the other as the reflection of their own culture. In the late Qing dynasty, tourists entered the west with the mentality of watching, but became the ones to be watched in the foreign land. The second chapter analyzes the late Qing dynasty travelers in the foreign space walking process. If "seeing" is a static gaze,"walking" is a personal perception of the outline of the earth,a deeper understanding of western culture. It was through "walking" that travelers in the late Qing dynasty experienced the fast means of transportation in the west and renewed their sense of time and space. It was also through "walking" that travelers in the late Qing dynasty had a deep understanding of modern civilization and began to view western material and spiritual culture more rationally, and gradually recognized it.The third chapter discusses the concept of modernity obtained by "seeing" and "walking".The traveler’s perception of "seeing" and "being seen" in the west, and the perception of the foreign space, gradually loosens the traditional concept and thinking mode of the west traveler to the point of collapse, and turns to rethink the western artifacts, technology and system, which finally leads to the formation of the concept of modernity. |
