China’s manufacturing industry plays an important role in the national economy. The prosperity of China’s economy cannot be achieved without powerful manufacturing industry. With the implementation of the “Made in China 2025”,the integration of China’s manufacturing industry with international technology has become an inevitable trend. The independent technical products developed by China are increasing and the export demand has also boosted, which has raised certain requirements for the translation quality of production manuals. The accuracy, authenticity, readability and standardization of the product manual translation will directly affect the practicability of the product and the user’s experience, which is of great significance for deepening Chinese and foreign technical exchanges and trade cooperation. Therefore, the author chose the translation of the product manual to study. This thesis is a Chinese-English translation practice report. The source text comes from the translation project of the “Manual of Copper Nodules Machine” that the author participated in during the internship in the Guangzhou Pierian Spring Translation Service Co.,Ltd.This text belongs to the technical equipment specification of EST(English for Science and Technology),which is professional and practical. The source text mainly introduces the equipment introduction, working principle, installation and commissioning, maintenance and service, and safety introduction of the copper nodules machine,so that the users can quickly and fully understand the relevant information of this product, improving the publicity and sales of the product to some extent. In this translation practice report, the author takes the Functional Equivalence theory as the guiding theory to analyze the problems encountered in translation from three aspects: lexical equivalence, stylistic equivalence and syntactic equivalence, and explore how to take into account cultural differences between English and Chinese in the text of mechanical manuals to achieve Functional Equivalence. This report is divided into five parts. The first part is the task description, which includes the descriptions of source texts and customer requirements. The second part is the description of translation procedures, including text features and descriptions of pre-translation and post-translation processes. The third part is an overview of translation theory, including a brief introduction to Functional Equivalence theory and the analysis of its applicability. The fourth part is the case study under the Functional Equivalence theory, which summarizes the translation strategies in practice through cases studies. The last part is a summary of the translation practice, summarizing the major findings and the limitation of the study. The author hopes that this translation practice report can be used as a reference for the translation practice of mechanical equipment manuals in the future.
