Translation Report For Batteries For Vehicles-Materials And Electrochemistry (Selected Chapter)

Based on the translation of the first chapter of Helena Berg’s Batteries for Electric Vehicles-Materials and Electrochemistry,this article illustrates the process and experience drawn from the translation practice from the aspects of lexicology and syntax.Analyzing the source text type and translation brief in accordance with functionalist translation theory,the translator chooses Skopos theory as a guidance.Summarizing three translation rules of Skopos theory,the translator further analyzes the cases,stating the translation skills of technical terms and conversion from the aspect of lexicon,while illustrating the methods of translating complex sentences by splitting sentences,adjusting the structure of sentence,changing passive voice into active voice and dealing with indirect questions.Based on these two aspects,the translator analyzes the problems occurred during translation,so as to provide materials for translation in similar topics.The article is divided into five chapters.The first chapter is the introduction,in which the translator introduces the author and content of the source text,while stating the features of the text,the objectives and requirements of the task.The second chapter states the translation process,including task preparation,translating and quality control.The third chapter is the guiding theory during translation and its implication to the task,including the analysis of text type and translation brief.The fourth chapter is case analysis,in which the translator clarifies the Skopos rule,the coherence rule and the fidelity rule,and analyzes some tricky cases in translation with the guidance of Skopos theory.The final chapter concludes the whole translation progress,presenting the implication and limitation in the task.Through this translation practice,the author realizes that it is important to accumulate sufficient background knowledge.During translation,the translator needs to be aware of the balance between coherence rule and fidelity rule,seeks appropriate translation methods under the guidance of Skopos theory,using proper translation techniques to make more fluent and accurate translations.
