In recent years, legal English education in China has flourished, and many universities have set courses in legal English translation, reading and writing. At the same time, many foreign law firms, multinational companies, foreign banks and other institutions attach great importance to the legal English translation ability of applicants when recruiting talents. It can be seen that improving legal translation skills is extremely necessary for young students. This thesis is an English-Chinese translation practice report of Translating Law by Deborah Cao.This book guides people to study the theories and techniques of legal translation. From the perspectives of linguistics, translatology and law,the book makes a comprehensive and in-depth study of the lexicon, pragmatics, style, culture and other characteristics of the legal language, the translator’s knowledge and skills, and matters worthy of attention during the translation process. In addition, the book also explains the legal translation theory from the perspective of cultural comparison. The sixth chapter of Translating Law mainly discusses the translation of two types of domestic legislation and makes a comparative study of the linguistic features of Common Law and Civil Law,which is of great value to legal translators. This report includes five chapters.Chapter One is mainly about the background and purpose of this project to show the significance of this legal translation report.Chapter Two introduces the three phases in the translation process, and they are pre-translation preparations,while-translation process and post translation management in detail.Chapter Three is the translation theory used in the report: Skopos Theory and Function Plus Loyalty Rule as well as the feasibility analysis of the theories.Chapter Four is the key part of this translation report.Under the guidance of the three principles of Skopos Theory and Function Plus Loyalty Rule of Nord, the author adopts corresponding translation methods for vocabulary, sentences, and legal cultural discrepancies between China and Western countries.Chapter Five concludes the drawbacks in practice and puts forward suggestions. The author hopes that this practice can provide a certain reference for future legal translation.
