Research On Roger Fry’s Formalism Art Criticism

The famous British art critic Roger Fry,as the founder of modern formalist aesthetics,the proponent and defender of post-impressionism,and the key figure of the Bloomsbury Group,he has played an important role with the development of Western modern art criticism and the promotion of Western modern art.He combined formalism with modern art activities,changed the traditional art criticism method and replaced the basis of modern formalism criticism theory.He is known as the "Father of Modern Art Criticism" and "The Father of Formalism".In addition,in recent years,the academic circles have paid more and more attention to Fry,and conducted in-depth analysis and discussion on Fry’s formalist aesthetics and critical theories.This article mainly starts from Fry’s formalist aesthetics and criticism theory,and summarizes Fry’s theoretical meaning and practical activities to study Fry’s art criticism view.The introduction of this article mainly explains the meaning of the selected topic,the current research status at home and abroad,research methods and ideas.The main text is mainly composed of four chapters: The first chapter traces the origin of Fry’s art criticism view,from the traditional formalist aesthetics and Italian appraisal,British modern art criticism and the Bloomsbury cultural circle.Chapter 2 mainly discusses the art criticism concepts conveyed by Fry’s three core theories of formalism,expounding art and life,classical and the relationship between modernity,emotion and form.Chapter 3 mainly discusses the theoretical characteristics of Fry’s artistic view as a formalist through describing Fry’s work style,comparing Bell’s view of form and analyzing Fry’s attitude towards abstraction.The last chapter mainly introduces Fry’s post-impressionist painting exhibition,the creation of the "Omega" workshop,the study of Cezanne and Chinese art and other art criticism practices to improve Fry’s view of art criticism.Through the analysis of Fry’s formalism art criticism view,Fry explores Fry’s overall understanding and attitude of the relationship between art,form and real life,and portrays a more comprehensive and complete Fry.
