| James Legge(1815-1897)was a famous Sinologist in early modern England and a missionary of the London Missionary Society.His translation of “Chinese Classics” has been regarded as a standard translation by the West,and many academics have done research on his academic achievements.However,there is no dedicated person for translation research and analysis of the commemorative articles after his death.This translation practice report was completed based on some of Legge’s commemorative articles,including condolence letters sent by his missionaries,colleagues and friends,the biographical articles written by the missionary William Muirhead on North-China Herald and Chinese recorder and missionary journal and missionary J.A.B Cook on The Straits Chinese Magazine.The content of the manuscript includes the memorial of Legge’s death from all parties in the society,the narration of his life,and the social evaluation of Legge.The practice report is divided into four chapters.The first chapter introduces the basic situation of the translation project,the practical significance of the research and related research literature,and selects the biography of Legge and discusses the related literature of the author’s identity in the translation materials;The second chapter elaborates on the translation process,from pre-translation preparation to analysis of the language characteristics of the text.It is clear that the language of the text has a religious style.Through the writing approaches of narration and discussion,author have expressed their’s emotions,the language is literary,and the materials are based on specific events.Being used written style,the language is solemn and formal;Chapter three adopts the research method of case analysis and summarizes the difficulties encountered in translation from the three parts of vocabulary,sentence and text cohesion and coherence.The fourth chapter is the author’s summary of this translation practice,experience gained from the translation process,and the enlightenment for future translation.This article aims to further understand Legge’s social status and social evaluation through the research and translation of Legge’s commemorative articles,and to provide more valuable information for scholars studying Legge,and to provide more cases to the translation of commemorative texts. |
