Study On Family Language Policy Of Foreign Residents In Shanghai

With the rapid development of China’s economy and the continuous improvement of internationalization,a large number of foreign families have come to live in China.The research on the family language policy of this huge group is of great significance for understanding the language living conditions of the foreign sojourn group and promoting their social integration.This study investigated the family language policies of 57 foreign families in Shanghai,and deeply studied the family language practice,family language ideology,family language management and related factors affecting family policies of the foreign residents in Shanghai.The main conclusions are as follows:Foreign families in Shanghai continue to maintain the habit of using the native language in language practice,and many transnational families have mixed use of multiple languages.The language ideology of foreign families in Shanghai is manifested in the national identity of the native language,the recognition of the social and economic value of English,and the recognition of the practical value of Chinese.The recognition of the three languages in descending order is English,mother tongue and Chinese.Foreign families in Shanghai pay attention to the cultivation of children’s bilingual or multilingual ability in language management,which is mainly reflected in the cultivation of early language ability,the choice of schools and language tuition activities.In addition,the family language policy of foreign residents living in Shanghai is unique and is affected by internal and external factors.Internal factors include parents’ language learning experience,overseas work,family structures and life experience and children’s initiative.External factors include sociocultural-related factors,community factors,country factors and school-related factors.The results show that the combination of internal and external factors will not only have a positive impact on the formulation and implementation of family language policies,but also have a negative impact.As internal and external factors change,family language policies will also change and adjust accordingly.According to the results of this article,it can be seen that the degree of social integration of foreign families in Shanghai is relatively low.Therefore,the government,schools,communities and related institutions should pay attention to and actively promote the integration of foreign families in Shanghai into the local Chinese society.It also contributes to the development of China’s social economy and culture.
