| With the collision,exchange and mutual learning of global academic thoughts,historical documents translation is becoming a vital part of the social science study,playing a key role in continuing with the past and opening up the future.Some of these texts are favored by both scholars and the general public because they have obvious literary feature and are highly readable.However,there are still some problems in the field of historical literature translation which have not been clearly demonstrated,and there is still room for further research.Therefore,the study in this field is of valuable practical significance.This translation study took the translation of the first three chapters of Cambridge and Its Story as examples to discuss the difficulties encountered during translation process.By using the methods of case study,analytical induction and comparison,this paper discussed from the aspects of vocabulary,sentence pattern and text.The origin,development and college structure of Cambridge University were mainly introduced in the original work,and its historical origin and early development were covered in the first three chapters.In terms of text type and style,the original text combined both historical and literary features.As the content of the quotation involving varieties of genres,cross-field translation standards should be followed,differences in language styles should be taken into account,and retaining ideas and style of the original text should be focused on.Domestication methods should be rationally adopted to promote cultural integration and adaptation.As to vocabulary,under the guidance of Verschueren’s contextual adaptation theory,lexical definition was discussed from two aspects,namely,the adaptation of contextual factors and the dynamics of adaptation,so that choices that fitted the context could be made.Various words in the text were verified through diversified professional and official channels.Accurate translation was achieved by means of customary translation,supplementary and annotation methods,etymological tracing method,word class conversion and abstract-concrete conversion methods to facilitate readers’ reading and understanding of the text.With respect to sentence pattern,the methods of splitting and merging,word order conversion,passive and active conversion were adopted,making the complex and varied sentence structures coherent.At the textual level,natural cohesion of sentences,paragraphs and punctuation were focused.By using different strategies and methods on rhetoric translation,formal equivalence was appropriately sought on the basis of romantic charm equivalence.Different needs of authors,readers and publishing companies were taken into account,so as to maintain a good balance between the accuracy and objectivity of historical contents and the literary flavor.In a word,this paper pointed out the specific translation methods in the practical application of historical documents by analyzing examples.Different needs of authors,readers and publishing companies were taken into account,so as to maintain a good balance between the accuracy and objectivity of historical contents and the literary flavor.This practice is conducive to improve the language learning ability and cultural literacy of translators,offer reference and suggestions for scholars in related fields,and hopefully be benefit to similar practices from a new perspective of translation studies. |
