| In the 1980 s,the traditional narratology in linear time could no longer meet the creative requirements of writers in the face of new social problems.More and more writers began to look for new narrative methods and narrative strategies to increase the expressiveness of literary works.In order to break the deadlock,more and more writers try to consciously bring space into the narrative as a new narrative role,and thus space narration enters the narrative field as a narrative technique.And the theory that studies this kind of narration specially,is space narratology.Spatial narratology studies how to expand various narrative methods through the multi-dimensional and flexible space to provide more possibilities for the rich and profound narrative content.The emergence of this new theory provides a new angle and new criticism method for literary theoretical criticism.James Joyce,1882-1941,the father of stream of consciousness novels and the founder of postmodernist novels,is good at creating profound and long-lasting works through fine writing and ordinary description.After the baptism of a long history,the depth and breadth of Joyce’s works became increasingly prominent,providing an endless space for literary researchers to interpret them.Space narrative science emerged in the 1980 s,and the combination of space and narrative provides a novel research perspective for the research of the Dubliners.In the Dubliners Joyce through the Dublin city space,reproduce the real appearance of the hometown,revealed Dublin as a "dead city" real state,and living in the dead city paralysis of Dubliners life,express Joyce’s strong love of hometown and deep reflection.The interpretation of the urban space writing of The Dublin Man not only helps us to interpret this work from more angles,but also helps to understand the author Joyce’s excellent writing skills and profound and charming wisdom through this work,and also has a certain enlightening role in the combination of research space and narrative by literary critics.Based on the theory of space narration,this paper attempts to make a comprehensive discussion on urban space writing in Dubliners by means of text reading and inductive summary,which is mainly divided into the following four parts:The first part introduces Joyce’s life experience and literary creation,and makes a simple combing of the writer’s background.Then it analyzes the domestic and foreign research status of Dubliners.After about a century of research,Dubliners are very rich in research results,but there are still gaps in space narration.This paper attempts to enrich the space narrative research of Dubliners.Finally,it combs the development background,development course and theoretical viewpoints of famous space narrators,and briefly introduces the theory to be used in this paper.The second part uses the space narrative theory of Mick Barr,Bashra and others to analyze the urban geographical space of Dubliners from the two aspects of "moving" urban geographical space and "spatial connection point ".Through the description of the geographical space of streets,taverns and markets as " moving places " and the analysis of windows and docks,the urban geographical space of Dublin is dilapidated,insensitive and dead.The third part analyzes the social space of Dubliners by means of the space narrative theory in Lefevoir’s "the production of space ",which is mainly divided into three aspects: the colonial political space of enslavement,the space of bondage of decadent religion and culture,and the space of abnormal family life.The fourth part analyzes the spiritual space of Dubliners under the sublimation of geographical space and social space,and introduces the concept of spiritual wasteland.After interpreting the development of wasteland literature,the expression of spiritual wasteland in Dubliners is displayed: the fracture of cultural belief and the lack of individual subjectivity.History created the fact that the cultural belief of Dubliners was broken,and the essence of Dubliners tragedy led to the loss of individual subjectivity of the whole nation.But the real tragedy is not the "living dead" state of the Dubliners,but the paralyzed Dubliners are indifferent,ignorant,weak compromise.While Joyce reveals Dublin’s "dead city" state and Dubliners’ spiritual wasteland,he sets the protagonist’s "spiritual epiphany" at the end of each novel to express his desire for a chance to live in his hometown of Dublin.This is Joyce’s unique way to express his hometown and bitter conscience. |
