| Oscar Wilde’s works are famous for their aestheticism. At the same time, the influence of Christianity on him cannot be ignored.Unlike most people’s understanding of Christianity,Wilde interprets Christianity from an aesthetic point of view.He grew up in a Protestant family, but because of the aesthetic function of Catholicism,he preferred Catholicism. However,Catholicism cannot fully meet his aesthetic demands.Between Christianity and aesthetics,Oscar Wilde, attracted by his aesthetic nature, went on a rebellious road because of the contradiction between Christianity and aesthetics. Finally,he thought about and integrated the relationship between the two, integrated the aesthetics into Christianity, and endowed the aesthetic ideal with sanctity, forming a unique artistic style. This paper analyzes the Christian aestheticization tendency in Wilde’s works from the surface to the inside through the characterization, artistic form and theme of Wilde’s works. In the aspect of characterization,Wilde created the characters in his works according to the character archetypes in the Bible, and endowed the characters and works with deeper ideological implications. In terms of aesthetic characteristics,Wilde expressed his aesthetic demands in his works, but never divorced from the influence of Christianity, whether in the form, content or tragic nature of the works In terms of theme,Wilde combines the Christian salvation thought with his own aesthetic ideal, and uses the self redemption and aesthetic redemption of the characters in his works to show his criticism and expectation of the real society. In Wilde’s works,Christian thought and aesthetic pursuit are not separated from each other.Neither can we refine Christian thoughts from aesthetic factors, nor can we shield Christian factors to pursue aesthetic demands. It is the Christian aesthetic tendency interwoven in his works that makes Wilde’s works have a unique artistic style. |
