The music video is a product of the cross-fertilization of popular music and the medium of television in a new era.Not only was it a new form of media,but it was also seen as a new audio-visual art,the birth of which had a considerable impact on the cultural sphere,including film.For American cinema in the 1980 s,it seems to have been influenced by the popularity of music videos as well.During this period,many films with "MTV aesthetics" emerged in Hollywood,which reflected a similar style to music videos in terms of editing methods and music use,and the traditional art of film and the emerging music video seemed to gradually approach and merge in form.Therefore,it is valuable to trace the origins of such a phenomenon.Focusing on the 1980 s Hollywood film context,we explore why and how the emergence of the music video influenced the field of filmmaking,and what changes occurred in Hollywood films as a result of this influence.In doing so,it provides a plausible explanation for the correlation between film and music video on a formal level,and brings a new way of thinking about the changes in Hollywood film since the 1980 s,from the production level to the artistic levels.The first chapter of this paper lays an important foundation for an in-depth study of the subject by examining the development of the music video,clarifying its composition and cultural essence,and sorting out the overall industrial environment and transformative development of Hollywood in the 1980s;based on the first chapter,we locate the music video in a discourse closely related to popular music,which also serves as the cornerstone of the interconnection between film and music video.Therefore,the second chapter of this paper focuses on popular music,first analyzing the significance of the emergence of music videos for contemporary popular music culture,and then exploring the renewal of the use and expression of popular music in Hollywood films.The third chapter focuses on the role of the music video in the development of Hollywood cinema throughout the 1980 s,which,because of its audiovisual and communication characteristics,not only provided a boost to the further alliance between the film and music industries,but also became more integrated into the artistic concept that was being reshaped by mainstream Hollywood cinema at this time.
