The Wei,Jin and the Southern and Northern Dynasties(AD 220-589)was a great division period after the establishment of autocratic centralization system in Qin and Han Dynasties.Mr.Zong once said : " In the late Han Dynasty,the Six Dynasties were the most chaotic and painful time in politics and society.However,with regard to spiritual aspects,they were the most free,liberated and emotional times in China." With the conflict between ideal and reality,the contradiction between individual and society,a unique group-"hermit" has gradually appeared.The hermit’s image and its related culture of this period made a great effect on later generations and became a permanent topic.This paper mainly studies the hermit’s image in Shi Shuo Xin Yu.It consists of four aspects:Chapter one introduces the background of hermits in Shi Shuo Xin Yu.It is divided into two sections.The first section mainly focus on the interpretation of "hermits ".Then,the second section explores the background of hermits’ appearance and their images from two perspectives: politics and culture,involving the political environment at that time,the decline of Confucianism,the rise of metaphysics and so on.Chapter two describes the classification of hermits in Shi Shuo Xin Yu.This chapter is divided into three sections.In the first section,according to the identity background,the hermits were classified into two groups: “Shi zu” and "clergy".In the second section,according to the hidden motive,they were classified into two groups.One group are to avoid chaos and political persecution,the other,who are greatly influenced by Taoist thought,regard retreat as a virtue.In the third section,according to the way of retreat,they are classified from two aspects,namely “retreats in the mountain forest” and “retreat who are away from the court and the commonalty”.It mainly elaborates the hermits’ spiritual choice when they retire from the society.Chapter three describes the characteristics of the hermits in Shi Shuo Xin Yu.This chapter is a sublimation which is based on the first two chapters,mainly talking about the common characteristics of hermits from two aspects: "broad-minded indifferent ","knowledgeable".Chapter four describes the cultural value of hermit’s image.It mainly explores the literary,historical and aesthetic value of hermit’s image in Shi Shuo Xin Yu.The first section discusses the literary value from the "prosperity of recluse poetry "," hermit anecdotes allusions".The second section is about the historical value,mainly discussing the value of Shi Shuo Xin Yu in studying the history of the Wei,Jin,Southern and Northern dynasties and it’s supplement to the history of ancient Chinese recluse.The third section is about aesthetic value,including the "recluse" realm and the transformation of aesthetic.The conclusion part summarizes that Shi shuo xin yu is an immortal literary work,which not only opened the precedent for the development of novel,provided us with information for recalling the history,but also made us feel the charm and wisdom of freedom in that era.The hermits and their cultural phenomena presented in the book not only continue the characteristics of the hermit culture of the previous generation,but also can help us better understand the historical and literary significance of the hermits in Wei and Jin Dynasties.Its cultural value,historical value and aesthetic style culture created a new situation for the development of recluse culture in later generations,which are of great significance to the construction of contemporary spiritual civilization.
