The English Curriculum Standard for Full-time Compulsory Education(2011 edition)puts forward that cultivating students’ autonomous learning ability is one of the main goals of English teaching.Strengthening the cultivation of autonomous learning ability,therefore,is one of the means to improve students’ English learning efficiency.The Guided Learning Plan teaching model is based on constructivism,humanism,and the zone of proximal development,with learning plans as the carrier and guiding learning as the method.It is a feasible teaching model to cultivate students’ autonomous learning ability.This study tries to develop students’ autonomous learning ability by the Guided Learning Plan teaching model,and mainly studies the following two questions:1.What is the status quo of junior high school students’ English autonomous learning ability?2.What aspects does the Guided Learning Plan teaching model improve students’ autonomous learning ability?In this study,two classes of Grade 2 in a junior high school in Karamay,Xinjiang,are selected as the research subject.First of all,prior to the experiment,two classes of students’ English autonomous learning ability is investigated.Secondly,teaching is carried out with the contents of the eighth grade English.Data are analyzed by means of independent sample T test after 12 weeks of teaching experiment,so as to investigate the subjects’ English autonomous learning ability again.Lastly,the improvement of students’ English autonomous learning ability is explored via interview.The results are as follows:1.Analysis of the pre-questionnaire,it can be found that students lack of strong interest in English learning,and their learning motivation is not clear.In classroom teaching activities,students are still learning passively,87.7% of the students do not get rid of the dependence on teacher.Students’ main position can not be fully reflected.In the process of learning English,students rarely make learning plans.Moreover,students’ ability of self-cognition and self-detection is not high.Students in the process of autonomous learning strategy level is low,they lack of learning method guidance.Students have less supervision over the learning process,they can’t complete the learning tasks as planned,and can’t force their attention well in class.Students are not good at seeking help from teachers and classmates.So students in the aspect of autonomous learning,self-monitoring and adjustment ability is not high,lack of good autonomous learning habits.2.The application of the Guided Learning Plan teaching model makes students learn from passive to active.By the post-questionnaire and interview,the Guided Learning Plan teaching model stimulates the student’s study interest,therefore the students are willing to study.The Guided Learning Plan teaching model has really aroused the students’ study enthusiasm.In knowledge learning,students have clear learning goals,learning important and difficult points and learning process.In terms of learning skills,students have a plan to learn,and can monitor themselves to carry out the plan.Students learn to sum up and reflect after class,they will consult teachers and students actively when problems come.Students begin to like discussion and cooperation,which fully shows that students’ awareness of autonomous learning has been stimulated,autonomous learning has been internalized into their own behavior habits.Some suggestions are put forward: teachers need to optimize the design of the Guided Learning Plan to reflect students’ dominant position in teaching.Teachers should encourage students to insist on self-study,requiring students to cooperate with each other and participate in classroom teaching activities actively,so as to achieve the teaching objectives of the Guided Learning Plan.Teachers also need to control the scale of classroom discussion reasonably,inspire students to participate in activities,and help them adapt to the Guided Learning Plan teaching model,so as to ensure that students learn easily,actively,interestingly and orderly.
