A Study On The Application Of Production-Oriented Approach In English Teaching In The Senior High School

The senior high school English course aims at helping students acquire knowledge and use language,and cultivating their key competency of English subject.The new curriculum standard puts forward higher requirements for English teaching in senior high schools;however,the present English teaching generally has the problems of much input and little output,as well as the separation of learning and using.Therefore,both English learning interest and English scores of students are not high.“Production-oriented Approach”(POA)has been developed to overcome the “separation of learning and using”,because it advocates“integrated learning and using” as one of its teaching principles.At present,this teaching method has been deeply studied at college English,but there is still a lot of research space in senior high school English teaching,so it is necessary to carry out the application research of this method in senior high school English teaching.A quasi-experimental research was carried out in this study for one semester in a senior high school in Zhangzhou City.90 students from two classes of Grade two were selected as experiment subjects.Class 3 was chosen as the experimental class and Production-oriented Approach was applied in English teaching,while Class 4 as control class and traditional teaching method applied in this class.This study attempted to verify the following two hypotheses: 1)POA can better improve students’ English scores than traditional teaching method.2)POA can better improve students’ English learning interest than traditional teaching method.At the end of the experiment,5 students in the experimental class were chosen randomly for an interview,which aimed to confirm the data of the study.The results show that: 1)The English scores of experimental class are higher than those of control class and there is a significant difference(P=0.049<0.05)between them,which indicates that POA can better improve the English scores than traditional approach.Specifically,The scores of listening,reading,English knowledge application and writing in experimental class are all higher than those of control class.But significant differences(p=0.044<0.05;p=0.000<0.05;p=0.036<0.05)only exist in listening,English knowledge application and writing,while there is no significant difference(p=0.504>0.05)in reading.2)The scores of interest of the experimental class are higher than those of the control class and there is a significant difference between them(P=0.046<0.05),which indicates that POA can better improve students’ interest in learning English than traditional approach.Some relevant suggestions are provided for teachers to improve students’ English scores and English learning interest by applying the Production-oriented Approach,such as designing output tasks according to students’ English level and improving the quality of their output,etc.
