Through daily social interaction, individuals acquire the relational schema corresponding to their own national culture, which will have an important impact on their future social cognitive activities such as learning, memory and thinking.Previous studies have found that individuals in the context of Chinese culture have a ring preference for social structure. So,is there any difference in this preference among different cultural backgrounds? This study explores(1)whether there are differences between the two kinds of children’s cognition of social structure in the context of Chinese culture and Indonesian Christian culture;(2)whether the cognitive preference of the two kinds of children is manifested as the cognitive preference of circular social structure and linear social structure.Preference of ring / linear social structure in different cultures.Study 1: using the free recall paradigm,Chinese and Indonesian children(aged 4-6)were asked to learn folktales separately.Folktales were adapted and set with two control variables: interpersonal relationship(ring / linear structure)and storyline(ring / linear structure). Objective to explore whether there are differences in children’s cognition of social structure between Chinese and Indonesian Christian cultures. The results show that Chinese subjects are more likely to recall the story of circular interpersonal structure, while the recall of the story of linear interpersonal structure is often poor;Indonesian subjects have obvious advantages in recalling the story of linear interpersonal structure, while the performance of the story of circular interpersonal structure is poor. There was no significant difference between Chinese and Indonesian subjects in the story of recall loop / linear plot. The results show that there may be cognitive differences in social structure between Chinese and Indonesian subjects in recalling folktales.Study 2: using the story completion paradigm,it is further proved that Chinese and Indonesian children have the cognitive preference of circular / linear social structure. The results show that Chinese subjects are more likely to construct the story of circular interpersonal structure, while Indonesian subjects prefer to construct the story of linear interpersonal structure. The results show that Chinese and Indonesian subjects have processing preference in constructing social stories, that is,Chinese subjects may have ring social structure processing preference, while Indonesian subjects may have linear social structure processing preference.Through two experiments,it is found that there are differences in the cognition of individual social structure under the two cultural backgrounds. In the context of Chinese culture, the recall accuracy of circular interpersonal structure is much higher than that of linear interpersonal structure. In the process of completing the story task, the subjects are also easy to construct the story with circular interpersonal structure. In the context of Indonesian Christian culture, the recall accuracy of linear interpersonal structure is much higher than that of circular interpersonal structure In the task of completing a story,it is easy for the subjects to construct a story with linear interpersonal structure. The results show that the subjects have a certain degree of preference for Chinese social structure in the context of Christian social structure. This study explores the cognitive differences of individual ring / linear social structure under different cultural backgrounds, reveals the profound influence of cultural schema on individual cognition, and provides certain reference value for cross-cultural communication, learning and communication.
