George Orwell(1903-1950)was an outstanding British novelist and social critic in the 20th century,he created 11 literary works in his life, including 3 nonfictions,2 literary reviews and 6 novels. This article will take George Orwell’s three novels, namely Burmese Days,A Clergyman’s Daughter, and Coming Up For Air as the research objects, and use the marginal man theory to analyze the survival dilemmas of the characters in his works, thereby triggers the human society to pay attention and reflection on marginalized peopleThe introduction is mainly divided into five parts:introduction of the author and his works, introduction of problems, research summary, theoretical definition and research methods, significance and innovations. It mainly studies the proposal of this topic, the status quo of research in China and abroad, and the historical origin and connotation of the marginal man theory,to discuss the image and characteristics of marginal people in George Orwell’s worksThe first chapter’s research focuses on the reasons for the formation of marginal figures in the author’s works.Through collecting data and reading biographies,we found that the causes of the marginal figures in George Orwell’s writings are closely related to the author’s own life, social background, and cultural influence.Starting from these three causes,we begin to explore the inner meaning of the marginal figures written by George OrwellThe second chapter’s research focuses on the ethos of the marginal figures described by the Orwell.Through research,it is found that the ethos of the marginal figures described by Orwell reflect his departure from the mainstream British ideology, that is,the protest against colonialism, the rejection of industrial civilization, rebellion against religious beliefs. The racial discrimination against "white supremacy" and the critic for of blindly pro-British psychology embodies the spirit of protest against colonialism of the marginalized people;the pursuit of idyllic traditional values and the utilitarianism that denounces industrial civilization embodies the marginalized people’s rejection towards industrial civilization;the escape from the imprisonment of Christian ideology, the advocation of the re-emergence of "atheism",and sarcasm for religious believer’s hypocrisy, reflects the marginalized people’s rebellion spirit against religious beliefsThe third chapter focuses on elaborating the value and meaning of the marginal figures in Orwell’s works. The writing of marginal figures reflects Orwell’s exploration of freedom and denial of totalitarianism. At the same time,it also arouses people’s reflection on imperial culture and genuine concern for true human nature. In addition, compared with the famous marginal writers in the history of English literature Oscar Wilde,Edward Morgan Forster, the marginal figures described by the author did not only exposed the darkness of British society and the distortion of human nature,it also urged people to overcome the barriers of race and ideology to realize free development. Therefore, the writing of marginal characters in George Orwell’s novels has important guiding significance for the development of mankind and society.
