The translation material is selected from the novel Disappearing Earth,about15,000 words. In order to arouse public awareness of women’s safety who live in Kamchatka,Russia,Julia Phillips, the source writer, wrote the stories of two little girls’ missing and showed what influences have been bought to other women in Kamchatka.Guided by semantic translation theory, this report analyzed the linguistic features of the original text and dug into its cultural connotations. As a novel,Disappearing Earth contains large number of descriptions of environment(including natural and social environment),characters(including appearances, actions, languages and mental activities)and cultural-loaded words(names of people and places),therefore, the author studied the feasibility of semantic translation theory in reproducing environmental features, characters’ images and retaining the exotic features by referring to the parallel texts and background information. Then, the author came to the conclusion that under the guidance of semantic translation theory, the flavor of the original work can be restored by reserving the original expressions. There are about 10,000 words in the report.Under the guidance of semantic translation theory, this report aims to discuss how to make the translation as close as possible to the source text in words, structures and so on,thus achieving the goal of retaining the style of the original work.It is hoped that this report can provide some enlightenments for translators who devote to translate those texts similar to Disappearing Earth. In addition,it is also expected that the target text can be a reference for Chinese readers to study Kamchatka culture.
