Before and after the outbreak of the Pacific War,under the background of the joint antiJapanese war between China and the United States,a number of special groups for the support of the American military service-translators were born.Due to the special requirements of English proficiency,most of the applicants were college students or above.By the end of the Anti-Japanese War,the Kuomintang government had gone through three stages of voluntary service,unified recruitment and open recruitment for interpreters in colleges and universities.A total of about 4,000 interpreters had been recruited,and they had also experienced different stages of role transformation and identity adjustment in the recruitment process.For producing a accord with national standard "the interpreter" identity,the KMT government gradually groping in practice,using the administrative power has a set of institutionalized translators identity standards,and formed the fab lead to military commission,field service and the Ministry of Education assistance institutionalized duty mechanism,responsible for universities to request interpreter.In order to implement the government order,universities and colleges have adopted a combination of compulsory recruitment and voluntary registration under the lead of Southwest Associated University to select students.At the same time,compulsory recruitment has also aroused students’ aspiration to serve their country through various kinds of spiritual mobilization and strengthened students’ cognition of the identity of interpreters.The different schools and different majors after selected,again through the unified organization of the field service of interpreter training skills and ideas on the short-term intensive training,eventually produce a group representing the will of the state,we bear the allied forces,the war of resistance of contact political mission of saving the nation,and is responsible for the military "the interpreter" friendly cultural exchange of China and the United States.As the subject of the recruitment,the students have mixed and diversified cognition of the identity of "interpreter" when they first hear the recruitment news.Most of them are worried because of the fear and confusion of the army,the lack of confidence in English level and the implementation of the government order.They worry that the identity has gone beyond the scope of the "students".Under the influence of the state and the guidance of the schools,most of the students consciously accepted the "glorious" identity given by the state after their psychological struggle,and unconsciously produced the expectation of trying to get rid of their current difficulties through the identity of "interpreters".But in practice,due to the institutional defect of the recruitment policy,their initial imagination and expectation for the role of interpreters have been gradually broken.The interpreters who cannot get a central position in their work have encountered difficulties such as The ambiguity of rank,unstable treatment,unreasonable personnel arrangement,complicated responsibilities,and weak position in getting along with the US military,so that they have to carry out self-adjustment and find a balance between their role expectations and practice.With the improvement of the autonomy of interpreters,most interpreters still show their strong national loyalty and choose to stick to their mission.However,in the process of demobilization after the war,the efficiency of the government was sluggish and low,and the preferential policies that had been publicly promised were gradually deteriorating until they went bankrupt,which made the interpreters gradually despaired of the credibility of the government and quit.Interpreter from identity to identity experience,from identity to identity the debugging,again the process of identity out back,not only reflect the national will influence on personal and individual to interpreter identity change,more reflect the particular time from the good interaction between individual and nation to gradually deviate from the state and the change of personal relationships and the shift to a certain extent weakened the effectiveness of the government requisition policy.
