Research On "Popular Literature And Art" Series Publications In Yan’an Period

During the Yan’an period,the "Popular Literature and Arts" series of publications referred to three publications with a certain degree of connection,namely,"Literary Assault","Popular Literature and Arts",and "Chinese Literature and Arts".All three publications were under the unified leadership of the Cultural Resistance,and after the former had ceased publication,they were renamed to the latter and continued to be published.Literary Assault was founded on October 16,1938 by the "Literary Assault Society",a group affiliated with the "Border Area Literary Association",and was the first literary publication to be born in Yan’an,with Liu Baiyu as editor-in-chief.On April 15,1940,at the urging of its editors and readers,it was renamed Popular Literature and Art and continued to be published.Popular Literature and Art was sponsored by the Cultural Resistance,with Xiao San as editor-in-chief.However,as the works of teachers and students of Lu Yi gradually took up most of the pages,it was not the original intention of the editor-in-chief and ended its publication on December 15,1940.Soon after,Popular Literature and Art was renamed China Literature and Art,and was launched on February25,1941,and was published by the China Literature and Art Society,a division of the Cultural Resistance,with Zhou Yang as editor-in-chief.However,due to the economic difficulties in the border areas and the editor-in-chief’s busy preparations for the rectification of the wind,China Literature and Art was finally published after only one issue.This paper consists of three parts: introduction,body and conclusion.The introduction states the meaning of choosing the topic of this dissertation,and describes the current situation of domestic and foreign research on the content of the "Popular Literature and Arts" series of publications,as well as the research methods used in organizing and collecting data and writing the dissertation.The main text is divided into five areas.The first section provides a basic introduction to the relatively stable political,economic,and poor culture of Yan’an at the time of the creation of the "Popular Literature and Art" series,which is helpful to grasp the background of this series publications from a macro perspective.The second to fourth aspects of the content are clued by the development of time,First,analyzes the founding and column settings of Literary Assault,and sort out the changes in its philosophy from "literary assault" to "spiritual mobilization",and then highlight the pioneering role of Literary Assault through the initial achievements in theoretical construction and literary creation,such as poetry,feature articles,and novels.It then introduces the founding of Popular Literature and Art,its philosophy and column settings,while focusing on the literary achievements of this publication and analyzing the construction of literary theory at this stage,and then summarizes the characteristics of this publication such as providing a creative garden for new writers,adhering to the wartime literary system,pursuing the popularization of literature and art,and absorbing foreign literary nutrients.Finally,analyzes the founding of China Literature and Art,the direction of elitist creation,and the insistence on the construction of literary theory.On the whole,this series of publications,under the unified leadership of the "literary resistance," made certain achievements in terms of philosophy and theoretical construction,but these achievements were achieved with the support of political power,which was characteristic of the development of literature and art during this period,but to a certain extent,it confined the free development of literature.The fifth aspect is based on the perspective of literary history,sum up the experience of the development of the "Popular Literature and Arts" series from both positive and negative aspects,objectively evaluating its achievements in supporting writers,cultivating readers,promoting the prosperity of literary creation and building literary theories,and also pointing out the themes that existed during the development of this series of publications.It also indicate the defects of this series of publications in the process of development,such as single theme,lack of aesthetic value,and excessive pursuit of realism.This rational interpretation helps people form an accurate perception of Yan’an literature and art,as the "Popular Literature and Art" series of publications have shown their different positioning in adapting to the development of the social situation,demonstrating the function of regulating themselves to adapt to the development of the times.The concluding section,by analyzing the close relationship between editorial staff and political party leaders,points out that the development of literature and art during this period was regulated by politics and even became a political propaganda tool,but makes clear that this was a special way of reflecting the value of literature and art in the anti-war environment.This points to a direction for the development of literature and art today: to maintain the independence of literature and art while be aware of the social value of literature and art.
