| This is a report on the translation of The Clock and the Camshaft: And Other Medieval Inventions We Still Can’t Live Without,of which chapter 4,5 and 6 are selected to be translated.The book is a historical book,with concise language and strong logic,which can be classified into an informative text.In Chapters 4,5 and 6,there are many sentences with complex structures.These sentences follow certain thematic progression pattern.It is the main difficulty of this translation practice to straighten out these components and translate them into sentences that are easily comprehensible to the Chinese readers.The translator uses the thematic progression pattern proposed by Systemic Functional Grammar to analyze the complex information progression pattern in the source text.Under the guidance of the communicative translation approach,the translator puts forward corresponding translation techniques,including omission,amplification,conversion,division and inversion to address the major translation difficulties encountered,which makes the translation fidelity to the source text.It can also conform to the reading habits of the target language readers. |
