| This is a translation report on the Chinese translation of The Future Is Faster Than You Think: How Converging Technologies Are Transforming Business,Industries, and Our Lives,co-authored by Peter H.Diamandis and Steven Kotler.Chapter 1 from the book, entitled “Convergence”,is the source text. This chapter focuses on the convergence and transformation of technologies in fields like transportation, machinery, and neurology and the tremendous impact these technologies have on human society. The language is concise and plain with many colloquial expressions, featuring terms, adjectives as premodifiers and long sentences, which increase the difficulty in translation. Some long sentences containing subordinate clauses truly challenge the translator. The translation of such an informative text must take the TT readers into consideration while conveying the author’s informative intention, making it readable and ensuring communicative effects. For this reason,Relevance Translation Theory is just right to guide the translator to pursue such optimal relevance for the realization of an accurate and readable translation of informative texts by adopting annotation, conversion and restructuring respectively, based on cases analysis between the TT and the ST.This report is divided into five parts.Part One is the translation project description including project background and significance.Part Two concerns itself with the background of the source text, including its authors and main content, and linguistic features like terms, adjectives as premodifiers and long sentences mainly with subordinate clauses.Part Three is about the theoretical basis, including a historical account of Relevance Translation Theory, its core concepts and applicability to the project.Part Four discusses translation difficulties and corresponding methods.Part Five concludes with the main findings and implications as well as remaining problems in the translation project. This project may help experts in science and technology and lovers of popular science books to expand their horizons, gain insight into the trends of science and technology, and seek inspiration to change society. |
