A Translation Project Report For Corpus-Assisted Discourse Studies On The Iraq Conflict: Wording The War (Chapter 5)

With the advancing of corpus linguistics methods,how to make this technology better serve the study of language has become a topic of academic research.The translation project is excerpted from Chapter 5 of Corpus-Assisted Discourse Studies on the Iraq Conflict.Guided by Jeff Verschueren’s adaptation theory,the translator has analyzed the translation difficulties in this chapter,finished the translation and summarized the corresponding translation methods.The source text belongs to informative text with its content involving linguistics,warfare and journalism fields so that there are various terms,long and difficult sentences.This report makes a detailed introduction from the perspective of structural adaptation and contextual adaptation based on examples in the translation project.In terms of structural adaptation,this report mainly analyzes the important and difficult translation points at lexical and syntactic levels and sums up the corresponding translation methods.In terms of contextual adaptation,this report mainly analyzes the key and difficult points of translation in the communicative context and the linguistic context and their processing methods.The findings of the report shows that although adaptation theory belongs to pragmatic theory,it is also of guiding significance for translation practice.This theory enables translators to deal with different types of texts flexibly,so as to achieve the purpose of cultural communication of the target text.
