This is a report on the translation of the third chapter of What Girls Need: How to Raise Bold,Courageous, and Resilient Women. The main difficulty of this translation project is the translation of indirect expressions, which are divided into two categories: indirect expressions with similar Chinese cultural context and indirect expressions that are used in uniquely English cultural contexts.Drawing on Ernst August Gutt’s Relevance Translation Theory, the translator adopts direct and indirect translation approaches to achieve optimal relevance of translation. The optimal relevance translation theory proclaims that the ostensive-inferential cognition process is the common cognition process of all normal human beings, which means that ostensive or extra clues may be needed by the TL reader to understand the message of the SL text, since no two languages have exactly the same linguistic repertoire.Based on this theory, the translator has resorted to “adding linguistic clues” and“converting perspectives of the original expressions” when translating the indirect expressions with similar Chinese cultural context;and “reformulating indirect expressions”,“omitting indirect expressions” when translating the indirect expressions that are used in uniquely English cultural contexts.
