The paper is purposed to analysis the typeface design of Charles Rennie Mackintosh.Between the end of 19thcentury and the beginning of the 20thcentury,Art Nouveau,a design movement that decorates with curve swept ac-ross the continent of Europe.Curve style had been widely used on the main-land Europe,however,in Scottland,a brand new style called straight line style.As a pioneer of Art Nouveau in Scottland,Mackintosh has designed over400 works in his lifetime,especially famous for architecture and furniture de-sign areas.Therefore,studies about Mackintosh are mostly based on his work of architecture and furniture,but few people pays attention to his graphic work.As the auther majors in typeface design,this paper will focus on Mackintosh’s typeface design.The first part of the research paper is analysing the Art Nouveau style ty-pefaces of the same period,to sort out the development history of the two ma in styles of Art Nouveau.Besides,with the instruction and the analysis of Mackintosh’s design theory,the author analyzed the causes of Mackintosh’s type-face style,and explored the social and historical factors that influence Mackin-t osh’s design.At the end of this research paper,the author summarized the characteristics of Mackintosh’s typeface design,including the typeface ratio,the center of gravity ratio of the letter,and the application of the square image,and some other elements.Based on the research above,the author mainly fo-cuses on sorting out the characteristics of Mackintosh’s typeface design style and its externalized visual effects.
